Bishops Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Review
The Bishops Leap Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made by Alana McGettigan for the Saint Clair Family Estate in New Zealand. The fruit is picked at its optimum flavour and carefully transported to the winery for pressing. Minimum skin contact is maintained to allow the fruit characters to be preserved which results in an outstanding white wine of superb value. Bishops Leap Sauvignon Blanc is a delightful wine to drink on its own but it also pairs wonderfully well with Thai food and most fish dishes.
The flavour characters of Bishops Leap are a delicious mixture of tropical fruit and refreshing acidity. Expect passion fruit, gooseberry, lychees, grapefruit and subtle herbaceous characters. This lovely Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc doesn’t attack the taste buds like many of the overbearing fruit bombs that are so typical in the mass produced New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines. This is because of the careful selection of the fruit and the obsessive drive for perfection from the Saint Clair winemaking team.
Each vintage the entire team get together to taste through the range of wines and many changes are applied until the team and the Saint Clair family are happy. Their drive and passion for producing outstanding New Zealand wines is evident in all the wines that come from this remarkable winery.
The Bishops Leap Sauvignon Blanc 2015 vintage is a wonderful white wine as the yield and quality are perfectly balanced. In recent years there has been varied yields and mixed quality and lots of growers have resorted to over production and over extraction. This has lead to soulless fruit bombs which have no subtlety and are difficult to drink.
One characteristic that is evident with the 2015 vintage of this wine is that so many people go back for a second or third glass. This can’t be said for many of the lesser wines that are in the UK marketplace. Bishops Leap Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc will mature quite happily for 2-3 years but it’s a wine designed to be drunk immediately rather than improve over time.
If you like this wine then why not try some of the other Saint Clair wines such as the Premium Sauvignon Blanc or the delicious Tuatara Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t forget their iconic Wairau Reserve Sauvignon which is one of the world’s truly magnificent white wines.
